At 6.4 meters (21') the TS21 is the biggest of the Hartley trailer sailer range. It is a roomy, safe and sea kindly vessel capable of costal waters cruising.
Although an old design, the TS21, as all within the Hartley range, has impeccable credentials and a solid well proven history.
No yacht design or brand achieves this sort of reputation without very good reason. Hartley trailer sailers can be seen sailing the waterways of many countries of world. The sheer quality and seaworthiness of the designs have contributed to an extraordinary global popularity.
With accommodation to sleep four adults the TS21 is ideal for weekends away with the family. Its larger size sees it capable of handling extended costal cruising and even the odd offshore passage when conditions are right. It is an easy to sail and sea kindly small yacht and can be towed by the family six cylinder car and stored safely in a carport or garage.
The TS21 trailer sailer is no speed demon by todays standards but by the same token they are certainly not painfully slow either. Nicely tuned TS21's can hold their own against trailerable yachts some fourty years newer, however, in an age of carbon fibre and light as a feather construction techniques their time accepting outright line honours in open class sailing races has well passed.
The smaller version, the Hartley TS16, is simply Australia's most popular small trailerable yacht. Period. It is undergoing a recent resurgence in popularity as more people look for a way to enjoy safe family sailing or on-the-edge-of-your-seat close racing without it costing a fortune.
In fact, a TS16 has just won the 2010 Trailable Yacht State championship sailed on Hobart's River Derwent as part of the Crown Series Bellerive Regatta. See: Hartley TS16 Wins Trailable Yacht division.
Exotic feather light construction materials that will see you bobbing up and down like a cork feeling every little ripple, carbon fibre masts, Kevlar sails, transom-less cockpits, designs that look more like space ship oddities than sailing boats and all requiring a budget that more resembles a lotto win are not the only options available. For those of us who want something inexpensive and easy to build, easy and safe to sail, the Hartley trailer sailer range offers some great choices for everyone.
I was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of a very nice fellow by the name of Dick Ward, the owner of Cairns Boat Builders. Dick is one of those master boat builders that seem ever harder to find in this day and age of composites, carbon fibre and space shuttle like technologies, although having said that his company's last project, a magnificent 44' luxury game boat, was exactly that!
